My community involvement spans close to 30 years. Prior to serving on the City Council, I was a member of the City’s Planning and Zoning Commission. More recently, I served on the 2013 City of Carroll’s Comprehensive Plan Committee, the City’s Strategic Plan Committee, and served 6 years on the St. Anthony Foundation Board. In addition to my City involvement I was a school board member for Kuemper High School and was a Kuemper Ball Chairperson in 1991. I also served on the committee that raised funds for the Carroll County Conservation Center. My Education includes a B.A. from the University of Iowa and an M.S. from Iowa State University. For 25 years I served as a full-time faculty member at the DMACC Carroll Campus. I am married to attorney Greg Siemann, have two adult daughters, and 5 grandchildren. My interest in serving on the Carroll City Council comes from being raised in a family that encouraged serving others—that is my primary motivation. My role, as a Councilperson, is to listen to the public and represent their interests, to be fiscally responsible, to promote transparency, and to give the public a voice at the Council table. During the next 4 years I intend to lead, work hard, do my homework, and bring facts and critical thinking to the Council’s decision-making process—while working to promote Carroll’s long-term growth and economic viability.
I was raised on a family farm near Storm Lake and graduated from St. Mary’s. I went to college at Fort Dodge Community College and then to Iowa State University. I began my working career as an agriculture technician, and then as a warehouse and equipment manager at Farner Bocken. When Pella Windows came to Carroll, I worked as an assembly line technician and machine program language writer. During my time at Pella, I started my craft business. Over the years my business grew, so I made it my full time occupation. I sell crosses, nativities and other craft items across the United States.
My family includes my wife Monica, a 7th grade teacher at Carroll Community Schools; Matt, a website designer code writer for different businesses; Sarah, a Doctor of Physical Therapy with Spencer Hospital; Chris, a Doctor of Physical Therapy in Des Moines; and Michael, a Doctor of Orthopedic Surgery in Spencer.
My commitment to Carroll started years ago. I was a youth sports coach for 21 years for many different sports, co-chair for the St. Lawrence Men’s Club for 10 years, campaign chairman for the Carroll School Booster Club for 10 years, committee member of the “High Schools That Work Program” for 4 years and a Carroll Community School Board Member for 10 years.
I began my work as a City Council Member by filling an open position. I was later elected to finish the four year term. In my work with the school board and now with the City Council, I enjoy being able to talk to the public and help them understand why things happen the way they do.
